Geriatric Massage!

Massage for the elderly can have profound positive health benefits. As we age, many don’t get the exercise or activity needed to promote circulation of the blood and lymph systems necessary for physical and psychological health.

Massage takes many forms including sports and therapeutic massage; with each form having its own techniques, including how much pressure is placed on the individual.

Geriatric massage takes into account the needs of the individual undergoing the massage, and the therapist trained in geriatric massage takes time before starting the first session to discuss any concerns or areas of the body that need particular care. They also continue to discuss the techniques as they work, to ensure that their touch is not to heavy, but is still being felt adequately on the areas being worked.

You can stop the therapist at any time to ask for adjustments if you are uncomfortable or experience any pain. However, both of these are highly unlikely; more likely is the chance of you becoming extremely relaxed and overcome with a sense of well being.

Lotions and oils are used during geriatric massage to minimize friction between your skin and the hands of the therapist. As well as increasing the effectiveness of their techniques, this also protects your skin and aids in improving its look and feel.

Massage at any age is believed to offer a range of benefits from improved blood circulation to increased joint mobility. As you age and become more susceptible to conditions such as arthritis, you may find that massage can help with the pain and discomfort associated with such conditions. Massage can also aid in combating depression and improving posture, as well as developing your overall sense of well-being.

Massage sessions always take place in a quiet, private environment. You are left to undress in private, or accompanied by a family member, friend or caregiver if you choose. The therapist returns only when you are lying on the massage table and fully covered with a sheet. At any time during the session, only the areas being worked on are uncovered.

If you are unable to lay down on your stomach, or back, you can lay on your side and be made comfortable with pillows or bolsters. Chair Massage is also an option and it wouldn’t require any undressing.
